Health Insurance Marketplace
The Affordable Care Act created a marketplace of healthcare insurance that is designed to benefit people at the poverty level and those fairly close to it. If you have trouble paying for your medical bills, then the health insurance marketplace may have something to help you. We’ll show you what these plans cover and how you can sign up for them.
How Much Coverage a Affordable Care Act Plan Provides
There are a number of different Affordable Care Act plans, also known as Obamacare plans. These can cover you for a wide variety of medical expenses, but they all cover at the very least the same list of essential healthcare services. They are all required to offer certain coverage that can come in useful.
That would be coverage for maternity care, including childbirth and pregnancy. It would also include coverage for rehab treatments, mental health care and any stays in the hospital. Inpatient and outpatient care are covered as well.
All of the Obamacare plans also provide coverage for preexisting medical conditions, meaning that you cannot be denied cover just because of a condition you have when you sign up. That’s a huge benefit for consumers and a major improvement over what a lot of other healthcare plans will do for you. For comparison, short term plans do not cover preexisting medical conditions.
The Cost of Obamacare Plans
One of the most frequent questions that we get about Obamacare is how much it will cost. While the cost of the plans has increased since they were first introduced in 2013, these insurance policies are still meant to be affordable. The amount you pay is based partially on your income, and you can expect to pay around 9.5% of your annual income on Obamacare premiums.
Other factors come into play as well to determine how much you will pay, such as your age, where you live and what kind of medical conditions you have. How to Enroll
Are you interested in signing up for an Obamacare plan? You can do that on the health insurance marketplace for your state or on the federal marketplace website. Some states will have their own websites, while others defer to the national site.
You can only sign up for Obamacare plans at the appropriate time. There is a short period that runs from November 1st to December 15th each year known as Open Enrollment. You may remember that was when the national website for Affordable Care Act plans crashed due to an overabundance of people trying to access the site at the same time when the act was first put into effect. The servers could not keep up with the demand. Things are a bit better now, and there are adequate services in place to keep that sort of problem from happening again, it would seem.
If you sign up during this window, then you can start to receive your coverage from the first of the following year. If you miss your window, then you’ll have to wait until next year’s Open Enrollment period starts. The only exception to that is if you qualify for an extended enrollment period. You can contact us to find out if you do meet the eligibility requirements for that extended enrollment, if you find yourself in a situation where you didn’t enroll in time.
Who to Enroll with
These insurance plans are sold by private insurers, though, such as Pivot Health, National General and United Healthcare. These major insurers give you a lineup of plans to choose from and offer their own benefits and pricing to make their plans stand out.
Pivot Health is one of the most popular choices because of their extensive coverage area and low rates. It is important to have an insurance provider that covers you in a lot of places. Otherwise, you could have to travel far to find an approved healthcare professional, and that can be inconvenient and cause you to not even want to go to the doctor’s office for your treatment. Why would you want to choose a provider that doesn’t cover you in your nearby area or that doesn’t allow you to go to any doctor or hospital that you like? This is why we recommend you stick with major insurers like the ones we have mentioned. They are more likely to have a large coverage area.
United Healthcare is another good choice, and that’s partly because they work with AARP to offer a wide variety of plans and some great customer services and member perks. They also have great relationships with thousands of healthcare providers nationwide to give you a wide-ranging network of coverage that you can depend on.
National General has decades of experience from which to draw, and they do a great job of adding value to their plans, giving their members benefits like phone access to doctors 24 hours a day, gym memberships, medical service discounts and more. Check out their full list of benefits to see what they do to make their plans more worthwhile.
You can find rates for all of these insurers here on our site, and you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that you are getting local, accurate rates that are relevant to you. We can help you to navigate the health insurance marketplace and find a plan that is a good fit for you. Just give us a call for professional advice or use our site to start gathering quotes as you try to make the right coverage decision.
